WHAT IS COMPUTER PORT ? DIFFERENCE TYPES OF PORT IN COMPUTER 


Computer Port 





A computer port is a connection point or interface between a computer and an external or internal device.  

The main function of a computer port is to act as a point of attachment, where the cable from the peripheral can be plugged in and allows data to flow from and to the device. 

Internal ports connect such devices as hard drives and CD ROM or DVD drives . 

External ports connect modems, printers, mice and other devices.  


CHARACTERISTICS OF PORTS 


A port has the following characteristics It connects external devices to a computer using cables and ports.  

They are expansion slots on the motherboard into which a cable of an external device is plugged in some of the ports are color - coded as per the global standards .  These colors help in identifying the devices that can be plugged in them. 

Let us discuss a few important types of ports - 


SERIAL PORT :- A serial port is an interface through which peripherals can be connected .  It transmits data one bit at a time over a single communication line.  It is also known as communication port 

It Used for external modems and older computer mouse .  

Two versions : 9 pin , 25 pin model Data travels at 115 kilobits per second .

PARALLEL PORT :- Parallel port is an interface through data is transferred in or outin para using more than one communication line wire called printer port .

It Used for scanners and printer .

PS / 2 PORT:-  PS / 2 connector was developed by for connecting more and keyboard 5  /2 connections are color coded as purple for keyboard and green for mouse PS / 2 por connector Even though the pin structure of both mouse and keyboard 5/2 portare same computers do not recognize the device when connected to the wrong port it is also called  mouse port PS / 2 port has now been replaced by USB port .

UNIVERSAL SERIAL BUS ( OR USB ) PORT:- 

Universal Serial Bus ( USB ) port replaced serial ports parallel ports .  5/2 connectors , game ports and power chargers for portable devices USB port can be used to transfer data , act as an interface for peripherals and even act as power supply for devices connected to it .  

There are three kinds of USB ports 

Type A Type B or mini USB and Micro USB.

It can connect all kinds of external USB devices.

such as external hard disk printer , scanner , mouse , keyboard , etc. 

It was introduced in 1997 .

Most of the computers provide  Minimum two USB ports .

Data travels at 12 megabits per seconds.



USB Port

VGA PORT :-  VGA port is found in many computers, projectors, video cards and High Definition TVs.  It is a D - sub connector consisting of 15 pins in 3 rows .  The connector is called as DE - 15 VGA port is the main interface between computers and older CRT monitor .

Connects monitor to a computer's video card .

It has 15 holes .

Similar to the serial port connector Serial port connector has pins , VGA port has holes  .

POWER CONNECTOR :- It has a three - pronged plug Connects to the computer's power cable that plugs into a power bar or wall socket.

FIREWIRE PORT :- Transfers large amount of data at very fast speed .

Connects camcorders and video equipment to the computer .

Data travels at 400 to 800 megabits per seconds . 

It was developed by Apple in 1994.

It has three variants : 4- Pin FireWire 400 connector , 6 - Pin FireWire 400 connector and 9 - pin FireWire 800 connector.

HDMI PORT :-  HDMI is an acronym for High Definition Media Interface .  HDMI is a digital interface to connect High Definition and Ultra High Definition devices like Computer monitors, HDTVs, Blu-ray players, gaming consoles, High Definition Cameras, etc. HDMI can be used to carry uncompressed video and compressed or uncompressed audio signals.  The HDMI connector consists of 19 pins.

MODEM PORT :- Connects a PC's modem to the telephone network .

ETHERNET PORT :-  Ethernet is a networking technology that is used to connect the computer to the Internet and communicate with other computers or networking devices.  The interface used for computer networking and telecommunications is known as Registered Jack ( RJ ) and RJ - 45 port in particular is used for Ethernet .

Connects to a network and high speed Internet .  

Connects the network cable to a computer. 

This portresides on an Ethernet Card. 



ETHERNET PORT


 AUDIO PORTS :- Audio ports are used to connect speakers or other audio output devices with the computer.  The audio signals can be either analog or digital and depending on that the port and its corresponding connector differ .  As the smallest commercially used audio jack , the 3.5mm connection is used for all kinds of headphones .

DIGITAL VIDEO INTERFACE , DVI PORT :- 

DVI is a high speed digital interface between a display controller like a computer and a display device like a monitor .  It was developed to transmit digital video signals with any data loss and replace the analog VGA technology.

Connects Flat panel LCD monitor to the computer's high-end video graphic cards.

Very popular among video card manufacturers.

COMPONENT VIDEO PORT :-

Component Video is an interface where the video signals are split into more than two channels and the quality of the video signal is better that Composite video .  Like composite video, component video transmits only video signals and two separate connectors must be used for stereo audio.  Component video port can transmit both analog and digital video signals.  The ports of the commonly found Component video uses 3 connectors and are color coded as Green , Blue and Red .
